Readers may remember that in 2018, Californians voted on and approved Prop 7, which would have put California on permanent daylight savings time. This would have eliminated the annoying clock changes twice every year. Nice try but it didn’t work because it required legislation from the federal government… not a trivial endeavor… thanks to the Uniform Time Act of 1966.

Late last August, the Texas Republicon governor and legislature unceremoniously and unilaterally voted to gerrymander their voting districts to favor the Republicon party. Fast forward to today, here in California, our Governor Newsom has decided to counter that move by promoting Proposition 50, in an attempt to equalize the Texans partisan move.
While the new slogan “Fight fire with fire” does have some meaning in this situation, other expressions come to mind. “No more Mr. Niceguy” seems appropriate. How about “What’s good for the goose is good for the gander”? “Seeing the forest through the trees” has a nice ring, too.
There are some key differences that need to be observed between these two political moves. For one thing, everyone knows that the Texas redistricting is the result of the Texas legislature and governor that unilaterally changed the district voting boundries has already occurred.
