Late last August, the Texas Republicon governor and legislature unceremoniously and unilaterally voted to gerrymander their voting districts to favor the Republicon party. Fast forward to today, here in California, our Governor Newsom has decided to counter that move by promoting Proposition 50, in an attempt to equalize the Texans partisan move.
While the new slogan “Fight fire with fire” does have some meaning in this situation, other expressions come to mind. “No more Mr. Niceguy” seems appropriate. How about “What’s good for the goose is good for the gander”? “Seeing the forest through the trees” has a nice ring, too.
There are some key differences that need to be observed between these two political moves. For one thing, everyone knows that the Texas redistricting is the result of the Texas legislature and governor that unilaterally changed the district voting boundries has already occurred.
California is responding to this undemocratic power grab with a state proposition that will be voted on with an open election.
Now we have to endure right wing political ads praising the virtue of California’s current redistricting laws which provide for a citizen commission. Not surprisingly, we never hear a peep from our Republicon friends regarding Texas and their current and past gerrymandering activities.
